No Text Pledge
Join Bayfront Health to advocate safety in TO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE!
Distracted driving is deadly. Each day in the United States, more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,153 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. The National Safety Council reports that:
- Cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.
- 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving.
- Texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk
Distracted driving is characterized by any mental or physical activity that takes the driver's focus off the task of driving. There are three main types of distractions: visual (taking your eyes off of the road), manual (taking your hands off the wheel) and cognitive (taking your mind off of driving). If a driver experiences any of these, then the likelihood of an accident occurring increases.
As a general rule, if you cannot devote your full attention to driving because of some other activity, it's a distraction. Take care of it before or after your trip, not while behind the wheel. Do your multi-tasking outside the car.
