Diagnostic Imaging & Testing in St. Petersburg, FL
Bayfront Health St. Petersburg offers a fully-equipped neurodiagnostics lab with a 38-bed unit specifically designed to care for and diagnose neurological conditions, including brain tumors, strokes, head trauma, spinal cord disorders and seizures.
In order to diagnose the extent and nature of your condition, professionals at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg may utilize a range of diagnostic imaging and testing techniques within our neurodiagnostics lab. These may include:
-
Angiogram: An angiogram is a procedure that takes photos of the blood flow in an artery or a vein using special dye and a camera. During the procedure, a catheter (a thin flexible tube) is inserted into a blood vessel and then guided to the area of study. Following insertion, a dye is injected into the vessel in order to allow the area to appear highlighted on the imaging screen. This procedure can be effective in finding aneurysms, as well as narrowing or clotting in vessels; angiogram may help your neurologist determine what steps to take next.
-
Computerized tomography (CT or CAT): A CT scan can be used by your doctor in order to quickly examine your body after any sort of trauma. This procedure combines many X-ray images and provides more detailed information than a normal X-ray. A CT scan can be used to study most parts of the body, and may be effective in diagnosing disease or injury.
-
Positron emission tomography (PET), and PET/CT: A PET scan may be helpful to your neurologist or doctor in diagnosing some neurological health issues. To begin the process, a radioactive drug tracer may be swallowed or injected. The tracer then gravitates towards the area(s) in your body that your doctor would like to examine. The tracer can be detected by the imaging technology. This procedure can be helpful in diagnosing many brain disorders and cancers.
-
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An MRI is an imaging technique that uses radio waves and a magnetic field to structure detailed images of your tissues and organs. Typically, you will lie in a large machine, as a magnetic force temporarily rearranges the hydrogen atoms in your body. As these atoms are being realigned, radio waves cause the atoms to exert faint signals which are then used to produce images.
