Justin Thompson, MD, is a board-certified physician with Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Medical Group Sports Medicine. As a specialist in non-operative sports medicine, he treats athletes and patients with active lifestyles who experience injury and those wishing to improve their performance and health.
Sports Medicine for Injury and Prevention
Dr. Thompson has extensive sports medicine training in order to restore function to injured patients and help them return to health as quickly as possible. While he does treat professional and collegiate athletes, many of his patients are adults, teens and children involved in recreational and team sports. Preventing injury before it happens is a key area of Dr. Thompson’s practice. He advises patients about how to improve their overall health and performance and also prepare for playing or exercising by strengthening vulnerable areas to avoid injury or repeat injury.
For those who do experience injury, treatment procedures and therapy include:
- Assessment and treatment of nutritional and biomechanical issues affecting performance
- Biological therapies including platelet rich plasma and prolotherapy
- Compartment pressure testing
- Dynamic ultrasound evaluation
- Exercise stress testing
- Treatment for joint sprains and muscle strains
- Myofascial pain treatment
- Non-operative fracture care
- Pulmonary testing
- Treatment of chronic tendonitis
- Trigger point therapy and needling
- VO2 max testing
